Mayumana

Mayumana -
Momentum

The Israeli dance troupe Mayumana was in Zürich this weekend and I went to see one of their shows. Colour me impressed. That was amazing. It was a really good show.

The theme of the show was time. They started off by showing a video about flies and how their perception of us is in slow motion, “so that when they see our hand coming down to hit them, they know they still have time to finish lunch before escaping”. So the troupe made its way onto the stage in slow motion. Then various clocks starting ticking, slowly accelerating, and the dancers started moving faster and faster, according continue.

New York Again

Times Square

Times Square at night

After Mountain View, I went to Memphis to visit some dear friends from a fellowship there. Because of this, I spent most of my time meeting with lots of people, so I didn't really get to see too many places, so no post about Memphis. One remark though: Memphis pork ribs are amazing. AAAA-maaaazing. I knew that from last time I was there, and it was just confirmed (and topped actually by the dry rub recipe) this time.

After that, I went to New York, for the second part of my bussiness trip. This time I stayed in Manhattan and I got to experience continue.

Why Nations Fail

Why Nations Fail book

I finally finished this book. I bought it from one of the authors a year and a half ago. The book has seen some serious mileage in my hands, having been to the Belgium and to the US. But I finally managed to read all of it. Having a goal to read 28 books this year really helps focusing on this.

I enjoyed the book very much. I don't necessarily agree with the hypotheses that it presents, but it also provided a good history lesson for me. Apparently I had some big gaps in my knowledge of things that are 1) far from me 2) happened a long continue.

Alcatraz

The Rock

The Rock

This year started off well, with another trip to the USA, on a business trip to Mountain View. One of the things that I missed last time I was in San Francisco was Alcatraz. When I arrived there I realized that you need to buy tickets several weeks in advance, so it was too late by that time. So, this time, after I bought the plane tickets to San Francisco, I bought my ticket to Alcatraz :)))

One of my favourite movies when I was a kid was "The Rock", with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, which takes place in Alcatraz. Ever since then I wanted continue.

Dockerizing a static blog

My blog has been compiled using Acrylamid for about a year and a half now. It's been great and I don't regret switching to it from Wordpress. I can write my posts in Markdown, in the command line, my posts are stored in a clear text format in GitHub, my site is way faster now than it was on Wordpress. However, deploying a new post has always been a bit of a pain. It's easy to write from anywhere, all I need is Vim and git, but until now, it was complicated to publish any new post, or do any changes to the site.

The problem was continue.

Bose Bluetooth Headphones

Bose Bluetooth Headphones

Last year I bought myself a pair of Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Bluetooth Headphones. After 6 months of usage, I feel like it's time that I finally review them, having used them enough :))

Let me first say my track record with all of my previous wired earphones: none of them lasted more then 8-9 months. On all of them the cable would give up somewhere towards the plug, even though one had some fancy shmancy Kevlar reinforced cable. Nope, still managed to break the wires inside it, even though I tried to take care of it and not just dump it into my pocket, but folding them neatly. Nope, they continue.

2015 in review

Woohoo. I wrote this post four days sooner that I did last year. Maybe in a couple of years I will actually write it on the first day of the year!!!!!

This year has not been such a great year. While the number of readers did go up slightly, from 12451 to 13110, actual page views dropped in half, down to 46926 from 92938 last year :( Alas, nothing lasts forever. Good thing I'm not making a living out of my blog. The bright side is that now I have more new visitors, 59.51% getting to my site for the first time, compared to 37.60% in 2014. continue.

Setting goals

Goals should be aggresive, but realistic

While this may seem like a New Years Resolution kind of post, I assure you, it's just a coincidence. In December I read two books about productivity. The first one is by Tim Challies, a Christian pastor and very prolific blogger, Do More Better, while the second is by Nick Winter, a programmer and quantified self enthusiast, The Motivation Hacker.

They are quite different books, written from vastly different perspectives and with different objectives in mind, by two people who have a very different view on life, but basically both suggested that in order to be more productive, you need to set clear goals, organize yourself, and commit continue.

The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens
poster

The Christmas party organized by Google in Zurich this year was... drumroll a private Star Wars: The Force Awakens screening. They rented out half of Arena Cinemas for half a day and they invited all Zooglers to watch the movie.

Normally I don't go to see movies in the first couple of weeks after they are released, because the cinemas are too crowded, but I couldn't miss such an occasion: a new Star Wars movie!!!!

In general, I enjoyed the movie. I left the cinema like, yeah, this was a good "reboot" of the series and I'm curious how this will continue. Of course, there were some bad continue.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 Review

Lumix DMC-LX100

Back in April, after my trip to Geneva, I realized I needed a camera. Just using my phone to take pictures wasn't going to cut it. No matter how good cameras in phones get, they still have a small senzor and a fixed lens, so in many conditions they will produce worse quality pictures than a good camera with the same number of megapixels.

I had been thinking about buying a camera before that too, but then I started doing some research. Initially I wanted to buy a DSLR, but talking to some friends who actually know how to take photos, made me realize that I shouldn't. I'm continue.
